A calorifier is an indirect or direct heated water vessel that provides hot water in a DHW system. A calorifier does not contain its own burner but in the case of an indirect relies instead on an external source of heat, such as a boiler, heat pump or solar collector, to heat the water.
An indirect calorifier is, quite simply, a water cylinder with a coil that is heated by an external heat source. The external heat source heats liquid – for example, water or solar fluid – in a heat exchange coil, usually situated in the lower half of the cylinder. The heat supplied to the coil can be delivered via a boiler or a renewable energy source or both!
There are many types, sizes, and designs, which can operate on external heat sources such as heat pumps, solar panels, Boiler or electrical heater, or a combination of these. The types also vary based on the materials used.
